We Are In A Mission To
Help The Helpness

Nurturing Uyghur Heritage and Family Integration in London IZQILAR weekend Community Group, established in September 2014, has become a vital institution for the London Uyghur community. Founded by Muhtar, Tursunjan, Nur Muhammed, Ekram, Ablimit and Kurban, the school began with a mission to preserve Uyghur language and culture among UK-born children.

Operating at Crouch End Hornsey Girls School every Sunday, IZQILAR initially partnered with the Ata Turk community school, receiving crucial support from figures like Abdulla bey, Zelish hanim, Helil bey, and Nuriye hanim. The curriculum evolved to encompass Uyghur language, mathematics, and cultural activities, adopting an engaging, non-compulsory approach to learning.

As the community group grew, it expanded its offerings to include field trips, online learning through the IXL platform, and various cultural performances. The community group lesson day typically began with the recitation of “The IZQILAR March,” setting a tone of cultural pride and unity.

Recognizing the importance of family involvement, IZQILAR developed comprehensive parent education initiatives. These include ESOL classes, workshops on British culture and systems, employability skills training, and digital literacy courses. Parents can participate in conversation clubs, functional skills qualifications, and exam preparation for tests like Life in the UK and IELTS. These programs aim to empower parents, enhance their integration into British society, and enable them to better support their children’s education.

IZQILAR faced its greatest challenge with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The school swiftly adapted, transitioning to online classes via Webex, though this change met with mixed reception from families who valued face-to-face instruction.

In April 2023, IZQILAR reached a significant milestone with the establishment of the Uyghur Cultural Education Centre in Enfield. This development allowed for the continuation of language and cultural education, with the addition of Quran reading and recitation courses.

Throughout its history, IZQILAR has remained committed to nurturing Uyghur identity while fostering successful integration into British society. As one parent noted, “IZQILAR has been a second home for our children, keeping our language and traditions alive, while helping us parents navigate life in the UK.”

Looking ahead, IZQILAR aims to continue adapting to the community’s evolving needs and exploring innovative ways to engage both students and parents. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a cultural and educational hub, IZQILAR’s journey reflects the resilience, adaptability, and dedication of the London Uyghur
